Deb Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna, received a B.A. in English, Professional Writing from the University of New Mexico. She attended the Pre Law Summer Institute, Class of 2003 and in 2006, received her J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law. Haaland organized for President Obama and served as the New Mexico’s vote director for Native Americans in Barack Obama‘s 2012 presidential reelection campaign. She led the New Mexico State Democratic Party and made an unprecedented run and win as the first Native American women to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Haaland made history once more when appointed by President Biden as the first Native American to serve in a U.S. President’s cabinet. As Cabinet Secretary Haaland championed issues for Indian Country such as the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, an investigative report called for as part a comprehensive effort to address the troubled legacy of federal Indian boarding school policies. She brings her personal experience as a military kid, a single mom, and a Pueblo woman to stand up for working families, Native and underserved communities, and to address the climate crisis. She is currently running for Governor of New Mexico.
